Discover Pisa, one of the most visited towns of Italy

Pisa is a beautiful town in Tuscany, intimate and peaceful. The city is rich in history and as delightful works of art and spectacular monuments. Pisa is touched by the River Arno and the Ponte di Mezzo, majestic and elegant, crosses the river with a unique and beautiful arch that leads to its north side to the beautiful Piazza Garibaldi. Another charming town square is the Piazza dei Cavalieri, surrounded by elegant and refined palaces, among which the Palazzo dei Cavalieri and the impressive Palazzo dell’orologio (Clock Palace), the latter made by the skilful hand of Giorgio Vasari.

Undoubtedly the most important and famous square of Pisa, is the Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral’s square), also known as Piazza dei Miracoli. Each year many tourists come here wishing to admire the fabulous and famous monuments that overlook it. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, of medieval origin, has a wonderful Pisan Romanesque style. The interior of the church is really beautiful, as it is decorated with white and black marbles, and with a rich golden ceiling.

Inside the church you can also admire a beautiful mosaic depicting Christ in Majesty flanked Holy Mary and St. John the Evangelist. The face of the saint was completed by Cimabue. Always in Piazza dei Miracoli there is the magnificent Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista. Its exterior is so beautiful and rich to remember an old lace, while the interior is simple and characterized by an amazing acoustics.

In Piazza dei Miracoli, we find the emblematic monument of the town of Pisa, the spectacular and world famous leaning Tower of Pisa, which is actually a bell tower. The tower is entirely in white marble and is 56 meters high. To build it, it took about two hundred years, but the fact that it “leans” is simply caused by a slight subsidence of the soil already during the construction. What is perhaps less well known is the fact that in Pisa, there are other two leaning towers: the bell tower of San Nicola Church and the one of the San Michele degli Scalzi Church.
