Mantova: amazing holidays in a beautiful italian city of art
Mantua (Mantova) is a beautiful town in Lombardy, which lies on the banks of the Mincio. It’s a town rich in history, culture and beautiful monuments. The city is characterized by a magical atmosphere of medieval appeal. One of the most beautiful squares of the city is the immense Piazza Sordello, which is surrounded by several monuments of rare beauty, like the magnificent Palazzo Ducale, the Palazzo Acerbi with its majestic Torre della Gabbia, the magnificent Bishop’s Palace, the magnificent Palace Bonacolsi and the spectacular Cathedral of Mantua. Inside the Palazzo Ducale (also called the Royal Palace of Gonzaga) you can enjoy beautiful works of pictorial art. The Cathedral has an elegant and simple Romanesque style with traces of Gothic style; the front is luxuriously decorated with Carrara marble and the interior is no less impressive and spectacular. Next to the cathedral we find the imposing bell tower in Romanesque style. Another charming square of Mantova, is Piazza delle Erbe with its amazing porches supported by arches, and its graceful and elegant colourful palaces. Just in Piazza delle Erbe, we find the majestic Palace of the Region, but also the delightful clock tower. Next to the clock tower, you can admire the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, a beautiful Romanesque church. We recommend you to stop and breathe some of the magic that this square gives off in one of the cafes that you find in it. The city of Mantua, however, is adorned here and there with beautiful towers, which increase the ancient and magnetic aura that characterizes this town. We also suggest you to visit in Mantova the beautiful Torre del Podestà, almost 50 meters high, and absorbed in the spectacular Palazzo del Podesta, the magnificent Tower of Zuccaro and the Tower of Gambulini and the one of Sant Alò. Another monument worthy of note in Mantua is the Palazzo Te, noble summer villa, dating back to Gonzaga’s age.. Another magnificent and imposing Church, the most majestic of the town, is the Basilica of Sant’Andrea, with his entry consisting of an immense arch supported by Corinthian columns. This Basilica is in a beautiful Renaissance style. [Photos: Alessandraelle from www.flickr.com] |
