Palermo in winter, ideas for Christmas and New Year’s Day
Especially during the holidays of Christmas 2009 and New Year 2010, many people will choose Palermo as a destination for their holidays, even thanks to the climate in Sicily which keeps on being relatively mild even during winter. The choice of hotels, b & b, holiday homes and apartment hotels where to stay is truly wide in Palermo. In the town’s old centre, what was called the Cassaro, you can admire many wonderful monuments. One of the most famous ones is undoubtedly the Cathedral of Palermo. It offer a mixture of architectural styles, due to the various dominations that there have been in the city. A jewel of architecture and art is also the Cappella Palatina, inside Palazzo dei Normanni. The Chapel, is decorated with fabulous mosaics in gold, and decorations in Byzantine style. The almighty Christ dominates the altar; a similar one it can also be admired in the Cathedral of Monreale, not far from the centre of Palermo. Don’t miss the visit to the historic markets of Palermo, the most famous of which is the Vucciria, an explosion of scents and colours. Other spectacular monuments are the magnificent Teatro Massimo, which has the record for the biggest theatre in Italy, and the beautiful Teatro Politeama. Around these two theatres, however, there are the most elegant and sophisticated shopping streets of Palermo. During summer you must visit Mondello, lovely seaside suburb of the city, caressed by a sea of Caribbean colours.
