Differently from what you can think the Carnival has very ancient origins in Italy; it dates back to pre-Christian traditions, which were related to some rites for the earth’s fertility, called “saturnalia and lupercali”.
Carnival starts on the 26th of December in some cities, while in some others it starts on New Year’s Day or on Epiphany. In some other cities Carnival starts on Candelora, on the 2nd of February; but anyway Carnival always ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which starts Lent, a fast time, but also a period of penitence and purification which prepares to Easter.
