Charming town of Veneto, Verona has ancient origins. Traces of its long and prestigious history can be found in its beautiful old town centre. It is full of delightful squares, wonderful monuments and palaces. Among the most beautiful squares of Verona, there is the wonderful Piazza dei Signori, surrounded by elegant buildings, connected with each other through some arcades. We also remember the magnificent Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza Bra, the current heart of Verona.
Its old town centre is full of monuments and works of art, one more beautiful than the other. The spectacular Colonna del Mercato, the Fountain of Madonna Verona, Porta Borsari, dating back to Roman times, are just some of the monuments worth of note. The medieval aspect of Verona, also greatly attracts the visitors. In fact the city is full of majestic towers, which give it even greater beauty. The medieval Tower of Lamberti is a typical example, as the majestic tower of Gardello or delle Ore.
Verona is also full of elegant buildings like Palazzo del Capitano, the late-baroque Palazzo Maffei and the current building of the Prefecture, which was once the palace of the Scaligeri. Among the churches there are the beautiful Church of Santa Anastasia, in Gothic style, the spectacular Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare, and the Basilica of San Zeno, in sober Romanesque style. Verona is also made even more beautiful and exciting by the fact that it overlooks the river Adige.
Thanks to the crossing of this river, in Verona you can also enjoy several beautiful bridges, as Ponte Pietra, dating back to Roman times, and Ponte Scaligero or of Castelvecchio, dating back to medieval age. But the symbolic monuments of the city, which attract numerous tourists every year, are the amazing and renowned Arena di Verona, the Roman amphitheatre arrived in excellent condition to this day, and Juliet’s balcony, which is located in a building that belonged to Cappelletti family ( hence the name Capuleti). Shakespeare, in fact, set precisely in Verona, the famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
